Newsline: US consulate in northern Mexico reopens

The US consulate in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas state in northeastern Mexico, resumed operation after being closed Saturday in the wake of a grenade attack. The consulate said in a statement that “we can offer the needed security to the diplomatic office, so the general consulate of Nuevo Laredo will reopen its door to the public in general.” The priority of the consulate is to guarantee the security of the US citizens and the Mexican visitors who come to the US consulate, the statement said. US Ambassador to Mexico Carlos Pascual on Monday told the press that after a grenade was thrown into the compound of Nuevo Laredo consulate, damaging the consulate buildings, investigations were being carried out by US and Mexican experts. “We do not want to speculate because it does not lead us to useful directions. We do not know who did it, nor if it is related to the US government,” Pascual said.
