Newsline: Diplomat to be tried in in his own country for hit-and-run accidents

A former Romanian diplomat wanted by Singapore authorities for two hit-and-run accidents in December last year will be tried in his own country. According to the Romanian General Prosecutor’s Office, Dr Silviu Ionescu has been indicted for homicide, causing physical injuries and making false statements. The date of his trial has not been set yet. Dr Ionescu, who was arrested by Romanian authorities in May, will remain in custody. He is alleged to have hit three pedestrians in two incidents in December while driving a car belonging to the Romanian embassy in Singapore. One of the victims, a 30-year-old Malaysian, suffered brain damage and died on Christmas Day, while two others suffered injuries. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has repeatedly called on the Romanian government to “ensure that justice is served and seen to be served” in the case. Investigators from Romania were in Singapore at the end of May to interview witnesses on the case. Singapore’s MFA has welcomed the announcement by the Romanian Prosecutor’s Office that Dr Ionescu will be charged with, among other things, homicide and that he will remain in custody pending trial. It called this an important step forward in ensuring that justice is served.
