The Iranian embassy to Azerbaijan said in a statement that Iran always built its Azerbaijan-related policy on principles of noninterference in the internal affairs, and Iran supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. “Iran never had the intention to interfere with the internal affairs of Azerbaijan and did not take any part in the events in Nardaran. Iran always wanted stability and tranquility in friendly countries and stood against the forced solution to problems and differences,” it said. The Azerbaijani government has launched a harsh crackdown on Shia Muslims in the country’s eastern Nardaran town. On Tuesday, hundreds of Azerbaijani forces carried out a raid on the town, harassing the population and tearing down Shia religious symbols. The town has been under siege and without power, water and gas since last Thursday when government troops killed four people in a raid on a Shia religious ceremony.
