The State Department says that an American student detained in North Korea and presented to the media there this week has now received a consular visit. Spokesman John Kirby says the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang visited Otto Warmbier on Wednesday. As the U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, Sweden handles consular matters for Americans in the isolated country. Kirby says the U.S. is coordinating closely with the Swedes, but has no further information to share. North Korea announced in late January it had arrested the 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate student. When Warmbier appeared Monday before journalists in Pyongyang, he tearfully apologized for attempting to steal a political banner from a hotel where he had been staying.
