Thousands of East Timorese are rallying outside Australia’s embassy in Dili calling for a fairer deal on maritime boundaries and a carve-up of oil and gas reserves. “This is a struggle increasingly seen by Timorese people as necessary to complete our independence from foreign domination,” organiser Tomas Freitas said at the protest, the second in two months. Labor has vowed to reopen good-faith talks with East Timor if it wins the election, but the federal government is not so keen.
