“The US Embassy [in Iraq] continues to operate normally,” the official stated. “We routinely re-balance our security and diplomatic personnel at all of our missions worldwide.” US media reported earlier that 25 Marines had arrived to the US embassy in Baghdad at the request of the Department of State. Security concerns in Baghdad have risen after protesters broke through Iraqi capital city’s “Green Zone,” which includes the location of the American embassy. The so-called Green Zone in the center of Baghdad is housing government buildings and foreign missions. The territory was closed to the Iraqi people over security concerns after the invasion of coalition forces led by the United States and the United Kingdom in 2003. On April 26, protesters entered the Green Zone and broke into the Iraqi parliament, demanding reforms of the political quota system. More demonstrations are likely to take place in Baghdad, according to media reports.
