A diplomat at the Sri Lankan embassy in the US had defrauded over USD 100,000 when the former government was in office, the Foreign Ministry said. The Ministry said that information in this regard had surfaced when investigating trips made to the UN by government delegations in the past. Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had last week tabled in Parliament a report containing details of trips made to the UN by government delegations since 2005. The Minister had found that in one case, in 2006 when he was the Foreign Minister, a 142-member delegation had accompanied former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the UN. However the files on that visit in the hands of the Foreign Ministry show that a 71-member delegation and not a 142-member delegation had travelled to the UN with Rajapaksa. The former government had been accused of wasting public funds for foreign visits by taking large delegations and accommodating them in star class hotels.
