The U.S. State Department ordered the family members of consular staff in Istanbul to depart the country for their own safety. “This decision (was) based on security information indicating extremist groups are continuing aggressive efforts to attack U.S. citizens in areas of Istanbul where they reside or frequent,” the agency’s warning said. The evacuation won’t affect business at the consulate, the State Department said. “The Consulate General remains open and fully staffed,” the advisory noted. Prior warnings advised Amercans to avoid travel in southeast Turkey due to increased threats from terrorist groups.
