Newsline: Former Canadian diplomat reportedly arrested in China

A former Canadian diplomat reportedly has been arrested in China. The International Crisis Group said Tuesday it’s aware of reports that its North East Asia senior adviser Michael Kovrig has been detained. The Brussels-based non-governmental organization said in a statement that it’s doing everything possible to obtain additional information about Kovrig’s whereabouts and that it will work to ensure his prompt release. The Globe and Mail in Toronto and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the arrest, citing unnamed sources. Reports of Kovrig’s detention come after China warned Canada of consequences for its recent arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou at Vancouver’s airport. It’s unclear if there’s any link between the cases. The International Crisis Group said Kovrig has been one of its full-time experts since February 2017.

Newsline: Immunity could be lifted for UK diplomat’s husband who allegedly beat her in New York

The British diplomat allegedly beaten by her husband in their Manhattan apartment only to see him dodge charges thanks to her diplomatic immunity may get justice after all, as a US congresswoman said she wants the protection lifted so the case can be tried. “The United Kingdom should waive this abuser’s diplomatic immunity so that he can be held accountable for his actions,” said Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D – Manhattan), whose district covers the East 47th Street apartment in which Youssef Amrouche allegedly attacked his wife on Saturday morning. The 46-year-old victim frantically called NYPD cops around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, claiming that Amrouche, 37, had hit her in the face, according to police sources. When cops arrived, they briefly arrested Amrouche but were forced to let him go — because he too was covered by the diplomatic immunity of his wife, who works for the UK ambassador to the United Nations, sources said. Maloney, who formerly co-chaired the House Caucus on Women’s Issues in DC, plans to petition both the British Embassy and the US State Department to close Amrouche’s loophole and give New York authorities a crack at the case.
