Newsline: Canadian embassy in Moscow partially evacuated due to fires

The Canadian government has initiated a partial evacuation of embassy staff and family members from Moscow due to the choking smog caused by raging fires around Russia’s capital. Some Canadian-based staff members assigned to Moscow, and their families, are being relocated out of Moscow, most of the Canadians are being sent to Berlin. But the embassy will continue to provide its “full range of services” for Canadians needing assistance. Staff and family members from the Polish and Austrian embassies have also been evacuated, while Germany has temporarily closed its embassy. Hundreds of fires raging across the country, covering 190,400 hectares of land, have already resulted in 52 deaths. Russia has already declared a state of emergency in Moscow and 13 other regions of the country.
