Newsline: Greek protesters clash with police at US Embassy

Masked youths clashed with riot police outside Greece’s parliament and the U.S. embassy Thursday as thousands of austerity-weary Greeks marched throughAthensin an annual commemoration of a bloody student uprising in the 1970s. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the rioters, and some 78 people were detained for questioning. Eleven people were arrested. Police also reported four injured police officers. A young protester was reportedly hospitalized after injuring both legs in an attempt to evade police. Some 28,000 people took part in the march, according to police estimates, making it one of the biggest Nov. 17 protests in years. Seven thousand officers were monitoring the crowd. Thursday’s annual protest commemorates the squashing of a pro-democracy student uprising in 1973 by the military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967-74 — and whose backing from the U.S. still rankles in the country. But the embassy march has traditionally served as a vent for anti-government protests that often turn violent.

Newsline: Embassy Helps American Turned Homeless Ukrainian to Return Home After Dating Scam

A former write-in candidate forArizonagovernor who ended up homeless in Ukraine says he is flying back to Phoenix next week after being entangled in an online dating scam. Cary Dolego, 53, ended up on the streets of a western Ukrainian city after a dating scam. He came in search of a Ukrainian bride but ran out of money. He said Thursday he will return to Phoenix thanks to a loan from the U.S. Embassy. Social workers in Chernivtsi last week found Dolego among the homeless — hungry, unkempt and suffering from pneumonia. Dolego, who ran for governor last year, sold his house and belongings in Queen Creek, Arizona to fund his trip toUkraine. He says he had been planning to meet and settle with a Chernivtsi woman he had met online, but she never showed up. The woman, Yulia, eventually showed up, but claimed someone had hacked into her account and had been exchanging e-mails with Dolego on her behalf. She refused to give her last name, citing privacy concerns.
