Newsline: New Zealand government remains tight lipped over Malaysian diplomat return

The Government remains tight-lipped over the arrival of the foreign diplomat accused of sexually assaulting a New Zealand woman. Muhammad Rizalman Ismail is due back in New Zealand to answer to charges connected with the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Wellington. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says Mr Rizalman will be arriving in the country “soon” but refused to elaborate further, saying it’s “completely in the hands of the lawyers”. However, he says the fact that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) communicated with Malaysia in a different way to that authorised by the Government is a “serious matter” that he intends to get to the bottom of. MFAT mistakenly gave Malaysian officials the impression that New Zealand was happy for Mr Rizalman to leave the country despite them being happy to waive his diplomatic immunity.
