Newsline: Con-man claims to be US embassy soldier in wire-fraud scam

A con-man screwed a Third Avenue man out of $1,200 in a wire fraud scheme, police said. The man received a call at his apartment near 100th Street around 2 pm from a man claiming to be a sergeant at the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic. The fraudster told the man he had his grandson in cuffs and the victim needed to wire over the cash to get him out, cops said. So the victim went to Western Union and wired the money to a man in the Dominican Republic.
