Newsline: Suicide bombing kills 14 Nepalese guards of Canadian Embassy in Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed 14 Nepalese security guards in an attack Monday on their minibus in the Afghan capital, Kabul, the Interior Ministry and an Afghan security official said. The Nepalese were on their way to the Canadian Embassy where they work as guards when the explosion took place on Monday morning, according to a Nepalese guard who was wounded in the attack. Officials at the Canadian Embassy in Kabul could not be reached for comment. The Interior Ministry confirmed that all 14 killed were Nepalese citizens, describing the attack as the work of a “terrorist suicide bomber.” It said the explosion also wounded nine people, five Nepalese employees and four Afghan civilians. Amrit Rokaya Chhetri, a Nepalese guard wounded in the attack, told The Associated Press they were on their way to the Canadian Embassy when the blast took place. In Nepal, Bharat Raj Paudyal, spokesman for Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the government is aware of Monday’s incident in Kabul and is trying to verify the names of the victims and details about the bombing. Nepal does not have an embassy in Afghanistan but the embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, is working to get the details, he said.

Newsline: South Korea to open embassy in Madagascar

South Korea will open an embassy in Madagascar early next month, government sources said, amid its stepped-up efforts to strengthen diplomacy with the resource-rich continent. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1962, but Seoul has not opened any mission in Antananarivo, the capital of the southeastern African state. After a government with close ties to North Korea took power in the African state in the 1970s, the bilateral relations remained chilled for nearly two decades. Seoul has been preparing for the opening of the new embassy in the African country for around eight months since it secured approval from Antananarivo for the mission. Seoul is also considering sending an official ambassador to the country, a source said. South Korea has pushed to strengthen its diplomatic ties with Africa as the resource-rich continent posts growth rates of an average 5 percent, and more countries are achieving political stability through democratically elected governments.
